Breast Reconstruction

Breast Reconstruction

The goal of breast reconstruction is to provide for a feeling of wholeness after mastectomy or deformity. Breast reconstruction is a surgical procedure that rebuilds the appearance and feel of a natural breast. It can be performed at the same time as the mastectomy, or at a later date. The decision whether or not to undergo breast reconstruction is highly personal. It is normal to desire the restoration of a natural appearance after a mastectomy or lumpectomy and everyone should know about available options. There are two primary options for breast reconstruction:Using the body’s own natural tissue Using breast implants The ability to reconstruct breasts has made huge strides in recent decades. A variety of silicone, saline, and contoured implants can be employed. Candidates that aren’t too thin can use tissues from another part of the body, such as the abdomen or buttocks. If only one breast is affected, it alone may be reconstructed. A breast lift, breast reduction, or breast augmentation may be recommended for the opposite breast to improve symmetry. During initial consultation, patients discuss what options are appropriate to their case, to help them explore if a breast reconstruction is right for them, and determine what type of procedure will give the best results and fits the patients lifestyle.
