Because of aging, pregnancy, breastfeeding, fluctuation in weight, or genetic disposition, many women’s breasts lose shape, firmness, volume and skin elasticity. The result can be a deflated, elongated shape. A breast lift, or mastopexy, reshapes and raises the breasts, tightens the surrounding tissue, and removes excess skin. A breast lift can rejuvenate your overall appearance, creating a more youthful, perkier breast contour. A mastopexy alone does cannot restore diminished volume. In this situation a breast implant can be added to the lifting procedure. Women with very large, sagging breasts a breast lift often combine breast reduction with the lifting surgery.
Women often choose to have a breast lift when:
- breasts have lost shape and volume, or they have gotten flatter and longer
- breasts fall below your breast creases
- nipples and areolae point downward
- areolae have stretched out of proportion
- one of the breasts falls lower than the other
The surgeon will lift and reshape the breast, move the areolas to the correct position on the new breast shape. In some cases the size of the areola may also be reduce. Extra skin is removed creating a firmer appearance. Incisions are strategically made in locations that will be less visible. Newer breast lift techniques minimize scarring. Some scars may remain visible and tend to fade with time. You may not be able to breastfeed after this surgery. If you are planning to get pregnant in the future, we recommend talking to your doctor before considering this procedure.
